MoveUP stands in solidarity with Ukraine against Russian attack

February 24, 2022

MoveUP’s Executive Board has released the following statement on Russia’s attack on Ukraine:

Our union stands firmly in solidarity with the workers, unions, and people of Ukraine in the face of the senseless and malicious act of war launched by Russia and Vladimir Putin.

There is no justification for this violence, which will result in needless and countless civilian casualties – to workers, to families, and to children.

Together with our fellow union affiliates and members across the country and across the world, we are calling out this brutal attack for what it is. We urge our federal government to do everything in its power to work with other governments and organizations around the world to push Russia to end its aggression and withdraw from Ukraine, and follow international human rights protocol, and settle any conflicts peacefully through diplomacy while respecting a free and sovereign Ukraine.

We also urge our government to support those who are fleeing the violence, to provide humanitarian aid to all those affected by this violence, and to offer visa-free access for Ukrainians.

To our union members who have connections to Ukraine or are part of Canada’s proud Ukrainian-Canadian community, we offer our support in any way possible. Know that we stand with you in this time of extreme difficulty, stress, and uncertainty.

This tyrannical assault on Ukraine must not be permitted to continue. We will stand united with the international community in the call for peace.

In solidarity,

David Black, President
Lori Mayhew, Secretary-Treasurer
Rysa Kronebusch, Vice-President, Utilities
Christy Slusarenko, Vice-President, Combined Units
Annette Toth, Vice-President, ICBC
