About our name

Our union’s name is MoveUP. When referencing our union in print, it is only necessary to refer to use as MoveUP. It is not necessary to refer to our tagline (“the Movement of United Professionals”) or to reference “378” which is our local number.

Our legal name is “Canadian Office and Professional Employees Union Local 378.” The legal name of our national union is the Canadian Office and Professional Employees Union. Our national union is commonly referred to by the acronym, COPE SEPB.

Learn more about our evolution from COPE 378 to MoveUP in the FAQ below.

When used in documents and online in standard type, the standard is cap ‘M’, lower-case ‘ove’ and cap ‘UP’, all one word: MoveUP

The phrase “the Movement of United Professionals” is part of our tagline, but not part of our name. When referring to our union, simply using “MoveUP” will suffice.

E.g. “MoveUP represents the workers at ICBC.”

Our name was not clearly aligned with our purpose and the evolving perceptions of our members. COPE 378 was not unique or memorable enough, limited our growth and did not coherently reflect our mission or our values.

MoveUP reflects that values that all our members hold – professionalism, progress and prosperity.  It carries on the tradition of the labour movement in a modern way.  It is about inviting people in and moving forward with determination together.

Our first formal name came in 1918 as the BC Electric Office Employees’ Association (OEA). Since then, our name has changed several times to match the shifts in our union.

Learn more about our different names on our History page.

We have been doing business as MoveUP since Monday, November 9, 2015
