If you asked colleagues to describe Nadine Brooks, “a force to be reckoned with” is a phrase that would likely come up.

It shows in just how quickly she went from newcomer to ICBC to dependable and reliable job steward, one who her colleagues know won’t back down when it comes to taking on the employer.

Nadine first joined ICBC in 2017 working out of the Kamloops Driver Licensing office and, not long after settling into her role, quickly became a job steward. She devoted herself diligently to improving her skills set, taking advantage of the many educational opportunities that MoveUP provides – as well as taking part in the Canadian Labour Congress Winter School – to expand her knowledge so she can better represent her colleagues when called upon.

At the CLC Winter School, she took part in a Mental Health First Aid course to learn how to proactively identify and address mental health concerns not only in the workplace but also in the community.

Thanks to her passion, Nadine is known as a fierce advocate for our members, someone who is not afraid to go toe-to-toe with the employer to uphold the collective agreement and someone who spends countless hours once she clocks out of her day job as a Client Service Representative to liaising with our MoveUP office and connecting with her union representative to discuss important workplace issues.

As a job steward working out of a smaller office in Kamloops, Nadine is extremely thorough in her work as a job steward, bringing forward issues that concerns members in her area at the Okanagan area job steward meetings. She demonstrates tremendous leadership and is also a mentor for other job stewards around her, providing solid advice on how to succeed in the role.

The Ardell Brophy Award, created by MoveUP’s executive council in 2011, is presented annually to a MoveUP steward who demonstrates fierce dedication and commitment to their union, and who provides mentorship to new union activists.
