Our union is deeply saddened by the passing of former BC Premier John Horgan at the age of 65.
John was more than just a political leader. He was a true champion for working people and was incredibly supportive of the work that our union was doing to support our members and strengthen their rights as workers.
After leading the BC NDP in 2017 to form government for the first time in 16 years, it was under John’s leadership worker-friendly policies were introduced including paid sick days, leave for survivors of domestic and sexual violence, and card-check certification to make it easier for workers to join unions.
It was under John’s leadership that our minimum wage was raised from being one of the lowest in the country to one of the highest. It was under John’s leadership that our members who work in the public sector were recognized for the hard work they put in every single day and that was reflected in our last round of collective bargaining that saw a historic wage increase tied to inflation.
It was under John’s leadership that our members working at ICBC were treated with respect and dignity and recognized for the incredible service that you provide for our entire province.
John was a true friend to us at MoveUP and to our entire labour movement in BC.
We will miss you, John.
In solidarity,
Annette Toth
