Happy International Worker’s Day

MoveUP recognizes today, May1 as International Worker’s Day.

The history of this day begins during that time when workers endured 10 to 16 hours workdays, six days a week. Working in unsafe conditions, where death and injury occurred on a regular basis.

On May 4, 1886, the Haymarket affair occurred in Chicago. It was a peaceful rally to support the general strike for an eight-hour workday, which ended in tragedy when a bomb thrown into the crowd. The explosion killed four demonstrators and wounded many.

In 1891, May 1st formally became International Worker’s Day, and commemorates the fight for the eight-hour workday.

Today, we thank you for your solidarity, as we continue the fight together for labour justice.
