MoveUP, the union that represents nearly 14,000 workers in public and private sector workplaces primarily in British Columbia and Western Canada but including members in Ontario and Quebec, is endorsing union leader Rob Ashton for NDP leader.
MoveUP joins many labour councils across Canada, as well as unions such as the United Steelworkers, the International Longshore & Warehouse Union, the International Longshoremen’s Association, and the Service Employees International Union Local 2, in formally putting our union’s support behind Rob Ashton.
“Working people across Canada have made it clear that they need to see themselves reflected in the next leader of the NDP, and that is why there is a huge wave of momentum behind Rob Ashton’s campaign for leader of Canada’s NDP,” said Annette Toth President of MoveUP. “MoveUP is proud to be part of this momentum. Our members recognize that we need workers to be the face of Canada’s NDP and Rob Ashton is the one who can bring the voice of all workers to the forefront.
“This is a critical time for our country as we face economic threats and uncertainty, in particular from the irrational and chaotic regime in the United States, and it is vitally important that the voices of working people – the people who keep our country running every single day – are represented. Rob Ashton is the embodiment of the working class. Rob has worked on the frontlines as a dock worker. He knows the struggles that working people face in our country because he is a worker.
“Now, more than ever, we need Canada’s NDP to return to its roots as the party of working people. We need Canadians from coast-to-coast to recognize that even if they don’t see eye-to-eye with the NDP on all policies, that they know the NDP is the party that will always, and without question, be driven to make life better for working people and their families. Rob Ashton is the right choice to lead Canada’s NDP back to its unparalleled position as the party for working people in Canada.”
