Day 3: 2025 COPE SEPB Convention

The morning of the third and final day of the 2025 COPE SEPB Convention was focused on debating resolutions that had not yet hit the floor over the first two days or had previously been referred, and conducting elections.

Resolutions that were debated and passed on Friday are listed below. Visit our Convention 2025 webpage for the resolutions.

  • Resolution 20A (Recognition and Integration of Immigrants in Canada)
  • Resolution 28 (Bill 5, Protect Ontario by unleashing our Economy Act, 2025)
  • Resolution 8A (Constitutional Change Article 17.11)
  • Resolution 26 (Text of the National Constitution)

Resolution 19 (Limiting the Length of the National Convention to Three [3] Days) was withdrawn.

Elections of officers were also held at the end of the morning session. Annette Toth was acclaimed as president of COPE SEPB, while Pierrick Choinière-Lapointe was acclaimed as the national secretary-treasurer.

Christy Slusarenko and Anderson Charles were announced as the vice-presidents representing Region 4.

In the afternoon, delegates were treated to a panel discussion on topics related to equity moderated by Creeson Agecoutay, and panelists Michael Redhead Champagne, Jill Stockwell, Noreen Mian, and Diwa Marcelino.

The panel explored questions around why DEI is important in workplaces, especially with what’s happening with right wing attacks in the States. Panelists shared their experiences about success stories they have had standing up for DEI, with examples such as winning adopt leave and creating a position for an Indigenous liaison at a organization (before reconciliation practices became more common) were mentioned.

The panelists also talked about suggestions for organizations to include more diverse people in workforces, what happens when DEI is not part of the workplace, as well as what actions that governments need to take.

The 2025 COPE SEPB Convention concluded with a thank you to everybody involved with organizing. The next COPE SEPB Convention is slated to take place in 2028.
