Job stewards raise funds for Scowlitz Community Safe House

At our 2023 Job Steward Seminar, our participants came together to raise $950 for the Sq’éwlets (Scowlitz) First Nation to go towards their Community Safe Home.

About the Sq’éwlets Community Safe Home

The Sq’éwlets First Nation were able to construct a new six-bedroom home to better support children in care. The Safe Home was constructed by Lacey Developments from Deroche, BC. The federal government provided funding to assist with construction costs of the new home.

Due to the long-term impacts of the Residential School system, many First Nations children and youth are overrepresented in the foster care system. It is the goal of Sq’éwlets Chief and Council to ensure that children and youth are connected to their extended families and community. This safe home is an important tool to help children remain connected to family and community.

Sq’éwlets is currently seeking operational funding to operate the home in addition to finding resources to furnish the safe home.
