CapU – S54 Notice – CIE – Update #1

To: All MoveUP Members at Capilano University
The University had served MoveUP with a Section 54 notice on August 25, 2026, regarding an anticipated restructuring of the Centre for International Experience. We immediately reached out and scheduled a meeting for Friday, August 28, as the notice provided by the University did not include any details on possible impacts to MoveUP members.
Unfortunately, the University did not have additional details to share in today’s meeting and advised that they are still in discussion with executives on possible employee impacts.
The Employer has advised that they will need until the end of next week to finalize details on these impacts. They advised that they are attempting to re-organize the affected positions into reporting to other departments, but they cannot confirm at this time whether or not any positions will be eliminated.
At our direction, the Employer has agreed that the Section 54 timelines will be held in abeyance pending the University’s disclosure of the details we need to adequately represent affected employees in this process, including whether or not the Employer intends on eliminating affected positions.
We understand that this notice being issued without any solid details to share has created unnecessary uncertainty and precarity, but the advance notice has provided us an opportunity to advocate on your behalf early in the planning process. We will continue to press the University for answers. We will keep everyone informed as soon as we receive further information.
