Plastic Free July

By Kristin Hewer, MoveUP Environment Committee Member

Plastic Free July is an initiative hosted by the Plastic Free Foundation, whose vision it is to have a world free from plastic waste.

Plastic Free July is a movement shared globally that aims to support millions of people in reducing plastic waste through simple everyday choices, becoming part of the solution to plastic pollution. In 2025, 174 million people participated.

By reducing plastic waste, we can all enjoy cleaner streets, oceans and communities.

Want to join the cause, but not sure where to start? Here are some simple ideas for avoiding single use plastics:

  • Bring your own reusable cup to your favourite coffee shop
  • Choose loose produce alternatives instead of buying in plastic wrap or container
  • Bring a reusable water bottle with you when you are out and about rather than purchasing water in single use plastic bottles
  • Refill household supplies such as cleaners, laundry soap and personal care items at your local refillery
  • Buy clothing made with natural fibers where possible, rather than those that contain microplastics

Musician Jack Johnson has been an international ambassador for Plastic Free July since 2018. This year he has committed to shopping for fresh produce at his local farm stand and refilling products at his local general store.

Check out plasticfreejuly.org for lots of great information on how you can get involved. You can even sign up for their challenge and receive a weekly email to help keep you motivated!
