November 21, 2024
MoveUP, the union that represents 14,000 workers in both public and private sector workplaces primarily in British Columbia, is proud to endorse MoveUP member and NDP candidate Vanessa Sharma in the federal by-election in Cloverdale-Langley City.
“Vanessa is a young, passionate advocate for working people and families, for women’s rights, and particularly those who belong to marginalized communities including people of colour, people with accessibility needs, and the 2SLGBTQIA+ communities,” said Annette Toth, president of MoveUP. “She is intelligent, articulate, and has a deep understanding of the issues that regular people face, such as cost-of-living, affordable housing, ensuring we have a clean environment for our kids to grow up in, access to healthcare, and much more.
“Vanessa has a bright, inclusive vision for the people in our communities and will be a positive voice as a Member of Parliament in Ottawa for the people of Cloverdale-Langley City.”
Vanessa Sharma has a long history of activism within MoveUP and Canada’s labour movement. In addition to being an active job steward and executive councillor for our union, she also sits on numerous committees within our union. Vanessa was elected as an equity vice-president representing the Workers of Colour working group within the Canadian Labour Congress in 2022.
In 2021, Vanessa was presented with MoveUP’s Peter Corren Award for her mental health advocacy. The Peter Corren Award is named after the late gay activist who played a major role in the legalization of gay marriage in Canada, as well as the updating of BC’s education curriculum to include pro-2SLGBTQIA+ content.
