MoveUP Issues 72 Hour Notice of Job Action at ICBC



Union Will Begin Targeted Job Action with Overtime Ban Next Week

BURNABY – Today MoveUP issued 72-hour strike notice in advance of targeted job action next week.

“This is about implementing what we’ve said all along will be a series of prudent, targeted job actions that will put pressure on ICBC and the government without hurting BC drivers,” said MoveUP Vice President Jeff Gillies.

Earlier this year 87% of members at ICBC voted yes in a strike vote after having been without a contract or a pay increase since 2009. After ICBC applied to the Labour Relations Board to have workers declared an essential service, job action was delayed but the union will have more options at its disposal at the end of June.

“We’ll be taking things slowly, starting with a ban on overtime on July 6. Future actions will be communicated at least 48 hours in advance and we’re getting great feedback from members about what we can do that targets the government and ICBC, not drivers,” Gillies continued.

“It’s pretty clear that drivers and our workers have something in common in that we’re both being left behind by ICBC. They’re giving huge dividends to government and pay increases to their lawyers and business partners but trying to freeze our wages and raise rates for drivers. We want to see that balance change,” Gillies concluded.
