Educate, Liberate, Celebrate: Pride 2011
August 4, 2011
This past Sunday, an estimated 600,000 people attended this year’s 33rd Vancouver Pride Parade: Western Canada’s largest celebration of the LGBTTQ community.
Continuing an annual tradition for our union MoveUP members took on a variety of roles: marching in the Vancouver Parade, attending Surrey and East-side Pride, and participating on the organizing committee for MultiUnion Pride, a group of labour activists working to involve and represent LGBT workers.
On Sunday the sun came out just in time for the first float to set out down Robson Street. MoveUP President David Black and many MoveUP members marched in solidarity with other workers from around the Province to demonstrate our support and commitment to equality for all. Alongside the MultiUnion Pride float members helped to hand out union goodies, including t-shirts, pens, frisbees, hats and treats to the crowds of adults and children in attendance.
And there are still other Pride events taking place around the province this summer. New Westminster’s Pride events will be taking place from August 11-14 (more information here) and Island Central Pride will be holding Pride events in the Comox Valley on the August 27-28 weekend.
MoveUP thanks all those who attended or are planning to attend Pride events this summer.
