Garbage strewn across a beach

A year in the life of Ocean Wise and Shoreline Clean-ups

By Kelly Cammack, Co-chair, MoveUP Environment Committee

I am such a visual person; it’s how I process, and how I learn. Ocean Wise has put together an amazing visual perspective of what they achieved in 2021.

Here are some of the achievements that stood out for me:

  • Almost 1 million people have participated in shoreline cleanups since the program came to be in 1994.
  • Last year alone there were 19,508 participants across Canada.
  • British Columbia led the country with 9,764 participants.

At the end of the year Ocean Wise produced a list of what they call “The Dirty Dozen”, the 12 highest ranked items found during the cleanups. Click here to have a look at what they are, or here for the full 2021 report. I don’t think you will be surprised, they are the usual suspects, with the addition in the last two years of PPE.

***Spoiler Alert***

COMING SOON!
