2019 Job Steward Seminar

Each year, MoveUP’s Job Steward Seminar brings together some of our union’s most active and engaged members for an enjoyable and educational event designed to allow our job stewards to upgrade their training and their skills so they can go back to their respective workplaces and help their fellow co-workers and stand up to difficult employers when the need arises.

MoveUP members, staff and even retired members, take time out of their busy schedules, and their weekends as well, to facilitate courses alongside special guest facilitators as well.

MoveUP President David Black gave the opening remarks at this year’s event while BC Federation of Labour President Laird Cronk was the featured guest speaker who talked on the theme of this year’s event which is “It’s About the People.”

Both presidents of their respective organization also commended the MoveUP members who are on the picket line at Westminster Savings Credit Union’s Shaughnessy Station branch and urged people to support them either by dropping by the picket line or by visiting www.corporategreed.ca.

Among this year’s guest facilitators include Adrienne Smith from the Canadian Labour Congress, and Neal Adolph from the United Way of the Lower Mainland.

The guest speaker to open this year’s Job Steward Seminar was Laird Cronk, President of the BC Federation of Labour.

The first day of the event featured breakout groups where job stewards had the opportunity to engage with each other in specific groups related to their employer. The rest of the event involve courses including:

  • Job Steward – Level 2
  • Organizing
  • Investing Bullying and Harassment in the Workplace
  • Connecting Job Stewards to Workplace Health & Safety
  • Seasoned Leaders: Mentoring New Job Stewards
  • Labour Community Advocate
  • Facing Management Effectively
  • Young Workers in Action

The United Way of the Lower Mainland was on-site promoting their Period Promise campaign, while the BC Federation of Labour Health & Safety Centre was also present. Job Stewards are also helping raise money to support the picket line at Westminster Savings Credit Union.
