Your Interests Continue to be our Top Priority

February 1, 2018

To: MoveUP members at ICBC

As you know the BC Liberal government has left ICBC with a projected loss of $1.3 billion by the end of the fiscal year March 31. This has caused a lot of stress and concern from the public, but also from our members working at ICBC.

The fact that the BC Liberal government knowingly ignored the information from the study that they commissioned all for the sake of avoiding political backlash is shameful. Our focus now is to find solutions that will allow the public insurer to get back on solid footing and protect our members. We will continue to work on your behalf with ICBC Management, Joy MacPhail, the new chair of the ICBC Board, and Attorney-General David Eby, the Minister responsible for ICBC, to find solutions.

We often hear from our members about the problems at ICBC. We know you want to make sure that injured people are looked after and services are maintained, but that you also recognize a sustainable solution needs to be found and we cannot allow the system to be abused by excessive legal and repair costs among other things.

Although ICBC may be facing financial challenges, we are here to protect you. We also want you to feel reassured knowing that your pension funds are secure. Unlike the situation at Sears, where the employer stopped paying their share of pension contributions, ICBC has and continues to meet all of their obligations to your pension.

We understand tough decisions are going to need to be made and they aren’t going to be popular decisions with some stakeholders. There is no magic solution to fixing ICBC but it is important to repair this damage without causing extreme harm to those who rely on ICBC and making sure the people, like you, who work hard every day at ICBC are protected. MoveUP still believes that a publicly owned auto insurance company is best for BC citizens and we are committed to ensuring it remains in place for generations to come.

If you have questions or concerns, please feel free to contact us or speak to your local job steward. As well, remember that you and your family have access to confidential support services through the Employee and Family Assistance Program. We encourage all members to take advantage of the services, especially during what may be a time of increased stress and worry. Homewood Health can be reached at 1-866-644-0326.

In solidarity,

David Black, President
Annette Toth, Vice-President
