We uncovered the BC Conservatives plan to double your car insurance rates
October 7, 2026
To: MoveUP Members
Last week, we got our hands on a letter written by BC Conservative leader Lorne Doerksen where he privately pledged to the trial lawyers and private insurance industry lobbyists a plan to tear apart ICBC. It’s a plan that would double rates for drivers while lining the pockets of lawyers and their friends in big insurance.
This is exactly what their predecessors – the BC Liberals – tried to do a decade ago. MoveUP members knew this was a bad idea and we stood up, spoke out, and fought back. We told BC the truth about what was at stake and what the hit would be to their wallet. As a result, today, BC drivers pay among the lowest auto insurance costs anywhere in the country, along with Saskatchewan and Manitoba, who also enjoy robust public car insurance.
A decade later, we are fighting once again to save you money on your car insurance by keeping ICBC publicly owned and operated by hardworking British Columbians including nearly 5,000 MoveUP members.
This latest backroom deal shows us who the BC Conservatives really care about, and it isn’t any of us. Selling us out to big insurance lobbyists and lawyers, who want to bilk the system out of billions of dollars again, tells us everything we need to know about them and who they really care about.
Yesterday, our union sounded the alarm, and we made our rounds with the media and, wow, did it resonate! BC drivers are as worried as we are!
Every MoveUP member needs to understand supporting the BC Conservatives is going to cost us more. It’s just that simple. It is in our collective interests, especially when it comes to our pocketbooks, to keep our public services public, whether it’s education, health care, transit, electrical power, and yes, even car insurance.
For our members who work at ICBC, this Conservative scheme won’t just hit you as a driver. Their goal is to permanently dismantle and destroy ICBC and the nearly 5,000 union jobs that go along with it. They are taking a direct shot at the hard work you do every day and once again, we aren’t going to stand by and let that happen.
We saw it in 2017, and we’re seeing it again in 2026.
My job as this union’s president is to support, protect, and fight to ensure the security of your jobs and to speak up for the welfare of you and your family. But I am not doing it alone. I am so proud to say that I have all 14,000 members right beside me because that’s what being in a union means.
We stand together, we fight together, and we win together!
In solidarity,
Annette Toth
President
