Teamsters Local 155 – Layoffs
April 24, 2020
To: All MoveUP Members at Teamsters Local 155
Your Union is concerned for all of our members and hope that all of you are staying safe. We know that these are difficult times for many, and layoffs are never easy. This pandemic increases the uncertainty for all.
Your Union and Employer have been in discussions regarding layoffs. To keep as many of you employed as possible, your Employer had inquired whether you would want to use your vacation leave or and banked time.
Article 14.4 of the collective agreement determines the amount of notice for layoff or salary in lieu that must be provided by the Employer to members, which is based on your years of service. However, your Employer, in consultation with your Union, has decided to give all members the maximum notice period of eight weeks.
In the meantime, we have been advised that your Employer will still require approximately:
- One full-time Category 4 Secretary II
- One part-time Category 5 Secretary III (maybe once or more every two weeks)
- One part-time Category 6 Bookkeeper (maybe once or more every two weeks)
As this is a very rough estimate, your Employer is currently canvassing members with respect to their preference. Layoffs will by done in seniority order once preferences have been determined. Please let your Employer know what your preference is no later than the end of business day Tuesday, April 28, 2020.
Given that we do not know what the future looks like, or when restrictions will be lifted for the specific industry that Teamsters 155 represents, your Union and your Employer are discussing a possible extension to your recall rights, which is currently a period of one year under Article 14.5 of the collective agreement.
We encourage you to explore the resources that are available for you at this time from both the Provincial Government and the Federal Government.
A list of these resources can be found on our website at MoveUPTogether.ca/FlattenTheCurve.
I am available via email kquinn@moveuptogether.ca or cell 604-803-0205 to answer any questions or concerns you have.
Please stay safe.
In Solidarity,
Kelly Quinn
