MoveUP Stands in Solidarity with the U.S. Transgender Community
February 19, 2025
To: All MoveUP Members
Dear Members,
In light of recent executive actions by President Donald Trump that undermine the rights and recognition of transgender, nonbinary, and intersex individuals in the United States, MoveUP unequivocally stands in solidarity with these communities. These policies not only erode essential protections but also endanger the safety and well-being of countless individuals.
On January 20, 2025, President Trump signed an executive order titled “Defending Women from Gender Ideology Extremism and Restoring Biological Truth to the Federal Government.” This order mandates federal agencies to define sex strictly based on immutable biological characteristics, effectively erasing recognition of transgender and intersex identities. It further directs the removal of gender-inclusive language from federal communications and prohibits the use of federal funds to promote what it terms “gender ideology.”
Such actions have far-reaching implications, including:
- Healthcare Access: Transgender individuals may face increased barriers to gender-affirming care, as federal definitions influence healthcare policies and funding.
- Identification Documents: The order requires that passports and other federal identification documents reflect biological sex, hindering the ability of transgender and nonbinary individuals to obtain accurate identification.
- Safety in Federal Custody: Transgender individuals in federal prisons and detention centers are at heightened risk, as the order mandates housing based on biological sex, disregarding gender identity.
These measures not only roll back progress made in recognizing and protecting transgender rights but also legitimize discrimination and prejudice. As an organization committed to equality and human rights, MoveUP condemns these actions and reaffirms our support for the transgender community.
We encourage our members to:
- Stay Informed: Educate yourselves about the challenges facing the transgender community in the U.S. and globally.
- Advocate for Change: Support policies and leaders that promote inclusivity and protect the rights of all individuals, regardless of gender identity.
- Show Solidarity: Participate in events and initiatives that uplift transgender voices and experiences.
Together, we can work towards a world where everyone is respected and valued for who they are.
In solidarity,
HRMC Committee, MoveUP
