Join us for an important webinar to discuss combating racism and discrimination on Thursday June 18, 2020 – 7 PM to 8:30 PM
June 16, 2020
To: All MoveUP Members
On Thursday, June 18, our Human Rights & Multicultural Committee is inviting all MoveUP members to join us for a free online webinar on the topic of combatting racism and systemic discrimination.
The webinar will run from 7 p.m. to 8:30 p.m. Click here to register.
Committee co-chairs Gunter Seifert and Christy Slusarenko will moderate this important discussion along with guest speakers from our MoveUP membership sharing their lived experiences with systemic racism as Indigenous, Black and Asian Canadians.
This will be an opportunity for us to listen to the experiences and stories from those who face these issues on a constant basis, and hear their ideas on how we as a union, as a community, and as a society have to come together and use our voices to affect real change.
Over the past several months, our union has spoken out on the rise of anti-Asian racism and, more recently, on the anti-Black racism that has led to demonstrations speaking out against police brutality worldwide.
Those are two issues that have come to the forefront recently because of the intense media coverage around it. But we know that racism and systemic discrimination runs far deeper than that and is not just isolated to those two groups.
We have received a lot of feedback from our members over the past couple of weeks, and we are very proud of the passion that our members have for these issues. That is why we feel it is important for us now to have this opportunity to gather together, to listen, to learn, and then to formulate real ideas that can lead to real action and real change.
We hope you will join us. If you have a particular story that you would like to share on this webinar, please email Christy at cslusarenko@moveuptogether.ca.
Date: June 18, 2020
