Vaisakhi (also known as Baisakhi or Vaishakhi) celebrates two unique events.

It is the harvest festival in the Punjab region of India and is known as a time for the harvesting of crops and is celebrated with traditional Bhangra folk dance and festivities.

It is also celebrated followers of the Sikh faith as the collective birthday of the “Khalsa Brotherhood” created by Guru Gobind Singh, the 10th Guru of the Sikhs, in 1699. During the month of Vaisakh, in 1699, a new generation of citizens was introduced, called the Khalsa. These initial five citizens represented values of change and social activism and Sikhism was born.

The five core Khalsa values are:

Daya – kindness

Dharam – fairness

Himmat – courage

Mohkem – determination

Sahib – strength
