FortisBC and FortisBC-CSC – Wildfires

August 14, 2026

To: All FortisBC Energy Inc., FortisBC Inc. and FortisBC-CSC MoveUP Members

Dear members,

As wildfires erupt across BC, our union is committed to supporting you and your family. We have heard from you that wildfire smoke has been affecting the air quality at certain FortisBC worksites.

We brought your air quality concerns to FortisBC, who has ensured us that all worksites are equipped with MERV 13 air filtration systems that continuously recirculate and filter indoor air. These filtration systems eliminate microscopic particles and larger debris found in the air including smoke, bacteria, and pollen.

FortisBC is not planning any alternate working arrangements for our members at this time. Currently, most of BC is categorized as low risk for air quality dangers. You can view this map which assesses air quality and is updated every hour by the province.

Further limit your exposure to poor air quality both in the office and at home by keeping exterior doors and windows closed. Do not lower your windows while driving. Considering using a portable HEPA air cleaner or a do-it-yourself air cleaner to filter the air in one area of your home.

You and your loved ones may also decide to avoid any outdoor exercise or activities during this time. Older adults, and adults and children with heart diseases, lung diseases, or asthma, are more easily affected by outdoor air exposure during wildfire season.

If you feel ill while you are on the job or have any concerns about the air filtration systems at your worksites, make sure to immediately contact your supervisor or manager, and your Joint Occupational Health & Safety Committee (JOHSC).

In solidarity,
April Young, Union Representative
