CMBC – IMPORTANT: Potential Unifor Job Action and How It Affects You

June 2, 2026

To: All MoveUP Members at Coast Mountain Bus Company

As you may know, members of Unifor 111 and 2200 at Coast Mountain Bus Company have voted in support of strike action.

Although Unifor now has a strike mandate, they must still serve CMBC with 72 hours’ strike notice before they can commence strike.

To be prepared for the possibility that Unifor members may strike, we want to provide you with information on what to expect.

What is MoveUP doing to prepare?

MoveUP job stewards have been tasked to ensure the contact information we have for our members is updated. We require your personal email address and your cell phone number in order to communicate with you if picket lines go up. We will not be able to contact you through your work email.

To help us through this process, please make sure we have your current cell phone and personal email address on file by accessing the MoveUP Member Portal.

We are also assembling a Job Action Committee (JAC) as well as picket captains in preparation for potential escalating job action by Unifor members.

When will we know if there is a picket line going up?

If we receive notice that Unifor members plan to go out on strike, we will communicate that to you through your personal email and through text message. There is no set time for when information becomes available. Sometimes it could be several days before, and sometimes it could be within a few hours. That’s why it’s important for us to have multiple ways to contact you and let you know.

What happens if there is a picket line at my work location?

If at any time you come across what appears to be a picket line, please do not cross it and seek a MoveUP representative at the picket line for further direction.

If you are unable to find a MoveUP representative on site, you can contact your Union Representative Andrew Cheverie at 604-473-3896 or the MoveUP office at 604-299-0378.

If your employer tells you to work from home because your headquarters or regular workplace is being picketed, follow their instructions but contact Andrew or the MoveUP office immediately to let us know.

Will I get in trouble if I don’t report to work because of an active picket line?

Your collective agreement protects you from discipline if you refuse to cross a legal picket line. If your manager instructs you to cross a picket line, tell them you need to inform MoveUP and then contact us immediately. This applies to all MoveUP members, even if you are on a temporary assignment in a managerial position.

Does MoveUP provide financial support if we cannot go to work because of a picket line?

MoveUP has a strong defence fund which we use to support our members who are respecting the picket lines of other union members. We will have more details on how to be eligible for picket pay if it becomes necessary.

In the meantime, please collect your last 3 pay stubs and be prepared to submit them to us when we ask. We will need them to process picket pay should Unifor escalate to a full a strike.

To expedite picket payment to you in the event of a third-party picket, we have set up a Direct Deposit Authorization Form where you can register your banking information with us. This will allow our team to process your information quicker and avoid any delay in issuing picket pay in the event of job action.

Unifor members do not work at my site. What can I expect?

While Unifor members may not work at your location, there remains the possibility that rallies or demonstrations are held, particular at the CMBC Head Office location at Sapperton or at 307 Columbia.

A rally or demonstration is not considered a picket line, so you will need to report to work as usual. However, we encourage you to support these demonstrations on your own time if possible.

If you are advised that there is a picket line in front of your work location, please do not cross and contact your Union Representative Andrew Cheverie at 604-473-3896 or the MoveUP office at 604-299-0378.

You do not need to determine whether the picket line is legal or not. That is up to the BC Labour Board. You just need to ensure you don’t cross any picket line you encounter.

Next Steps

Strikes and job action are fluid and can change rapidly as events unfold. We will keep you updated with the most important information as we receive it.

If you become aware of any relevant information, please let your job steward know so they can bring it to our attention.

Please be on the lookout for further updates from us through email and text message.

In solidarity,

Andrew Cheverie, Union Representative
Dora Wong, Union Representative
Christy Slusakrenko, Vice-President, Combined Units
