Bargaining
BCIT Student Association – Bargaining Update #1
September 2, 2025
To: All MoveUP members at BCITSA
Your Union has met with the Employer on the 21, 25, 26, and 28 to commence the negotiation of your first collective agreement. The parties exchanged proposals and started substantive discussions on various non-monetary proposals, laying much of the groundwork needed to secure a collective agreement.
As you may know, MoveUP has an extensive history of representing the workers of universities and student associations. The office workers at the Alma Mater Society, the student association at the University of British Columbia, has been unionized with our local since 1971. The technical, clerical, and support staff at Capilano University have been unionized with our local since 1974.
We are optimistic that more progress will be made as the employer gradually becomes familiar with the collective bargaining process.
Our mandate from you is clear: you want a fair agreement with a focus on job security, stability, compensation equality, and transparency. We will continue to engage in these discussions with the employer and will have the next bargaining session in the week of September 15, 2025.
Your union has identified the need to ensure that you are made aware of existing key policies, such as BCIT’s Harassment and Discrimination policy, Complaint Options and WorkSafeBC’s Right to Refuse Unsafe Work. You are encouraged to contact your union’s servicing representatives for additional support if you have any specific concerns or questions. We will keep you appraised as the negotiation moves ahead.
In solidarity,
Kai Sharpe, Union Representative
Anny Chen, Union Representative
