There has been some confusion around our recently settled Memorandum of Agreement. We have achieved massive increases for everyone in each step of the grid as well as condensed the wage step scale from 8 steps to 6. This results in people’s pay increasing exponentially faster than if you had stayed with the 8. For example, starting rate is now up from $19.08 to $22.49 per hour which is an increase of $3.41 per hour or almost 20%. On March 15th, 2024 someone currently at starting rate will move to step 2 which will be $24.45 up from $19.75 which is over 20% higher. In agreement to make such drastic increases, as well as reduce the time required to reach top rate, we had to agree on retroactive pay of 5% back to March of 2023. This is almost 14 months of retroactive pay and as an example, someone who earned $40,000 in hourly pay, not including shift premium, this would be retro pay of $2,000. Someone with $60,000 in hourly pay over this period would equate to $3,000 retro pay.
This is a great deal, and one that your bargaining committee fully endorses so we recommend that you vote yes to ratify it. The window to vote was delayed so that we could clear up some issues with where people fall on the new grid but have squared that away now and are re-opening the voting at 1pm today and it will be open for 24 hours. I will be having some conversation with members who may have not been accurately moved through the step scales and have the opportunity to file a grievance for the pay difference if we believe the employer has violated the previous collective agreement that ran to March 14, 2023. But this is a separate issue from this new Memorandum of Agreement which will provide for excellent pay jumps for all members.
