Alycia Guile:

“Hi Environment Committee!

First, I would like to say thank you for your time and commitment to this committee. I know you all have busy lives, and your dedication to this committee is very important and valuable!

My name is Alycia Guile (she/her), and I have been a MoveUP member since February 2019. In my time with MoveUP, I have moved through a couple different work positions, and have landed as the Executive Assistant at the BC Centre for Women in the Trades. We work to advance diversity, equity, and inclusion in the Skilled Trades (construction) industry. I love my job, but as the only MoveUP member in my workplace, I don’t often get the chance to connect with my fellow MoveUP members, which is why I joined the Events and Social Planning, Youth Action, and Environment Committees.

I have been a member of the Environment Committee since the MoveUP convention in October of 2021, and am eager to have the opportunity to run for co-chair of this committee.

A little more about me, and why I am passionate about being elected the co-chair of this committee:

In 2019, I graduated from SFU with a Bachelor of Environment, in “Resource and Environmental Management”. I, like many other undergrad students, entered university without a plan, and feel very lucky to have found my passion in the Faculty of Environment. There I learned so much about the 3 pillars of sustainability – Social, Environmental, and Economic – and am passionate about ensuring the consideration of all 3 pillars in all my work.

After a few years of (what I thought was) work unrelated to my field (administrative work at a trades college), I decided to pivot into my field of passion. When searching for jobs, I quickly realized I needed either 5 years of work experience, or a Masters degree.

In January of 2022, I started my Masters of Sustainability at Harvard Extension School. I am proud to say that I am still working through this Masters degree and intend on graduating in December of 2024.

Through my degrees, work in the Social Justice movement, and personal life, I have become a passionate ally and advocate of Sustainability. While we are called the “Environment” committee, there is a strong connection between environmental and social justice – as we can also see inside the labour movement.

My goals for this committee moving forward are:

  1. Increase our presence and power in the union. As discussed in our last meeting, I think that the Environment committee should have more of a say in what happens at the union – from sustainable SWAG to zero-waste events, to encouraging vegan catering at meetings, we have the opportunity to make a huge positive difference to the happenings in our union, and I intend to help make that happen.
  2. Build the capacity of our existing members and recruit new members from underrepresented MoveUP workplaces. So much of what we do as the Environment committee is on the side of our desks and in our free time. I want to recruit more committee members, so that our meetings can include more diverse perspectives, and we can lighten the load of our loyal committee members (THANK YOU all for your commitment and time thus far!).
  3. Collaborate with other committees and attend events with joint-committee participation. Whether it’s Earth Day, Pride, Women’s Day, or National Truth and Reconciliation Day events, there is no reason that committee members can’t come together to support cross-committee events. I want to see more collaboration, and less silo-ed committee work (Thank you to Jeff Bryant for this suggestion at the last meeting – I am happy to help you with your efforts in making this happen!)
  4. Continuing our work with the education of all MoveUP members. Our co-chair Kelly has been incredible at facilitating the submission of articles to The Local Voice, and I want to help empower committee members to continue these efforts, however they can. That ongoing presence and education is an invaluable part of this committee’s work.

Thank you for taking the time to read more about me, and my goals for this committee. I hope you will consider voting for me in the upcoming co-chair election in August. If you have any questions or would like to chat with me further, please feel free to reach out: alyguile@gmail.com.

I hope you are all enjoying your summer, and I look forward to seeing you for the election in August!

Alycia Guile”

Jaime Scott:

“Jaime became a Job Steward in 2020 at the height of the COVID-19 pandemic and is currently serving her second term on the Executive Council. She is an active member, serving on the Human Rights and Multicultural Committee, Youth Action Committee, and Environment Committee. Jaime is also a MoveUp Job Steward facilitator.

Jaime is passionate about the environment, with a special interest in how our actions not only influence the human species, but also how they impact the animals we share this earth with.

Moving forward, Jaime has ideas on how the Environment Committee can “walk the walk”, so-to-say, and create change within MoveUP as an organization that will positively impact the environment.”
