ICBC – Working from Home and Your 2020 Income Tax

February 16, 2021

To: All MoveUP members at ICBC

When many of our members at ICBC began working from home due to the pandemic, it did not take long for us to start fielding questions about how this could impact your 2020 income tax.

This was not just an issue for ICBC employees, but for millions of Canadians who were suddenly working from home due to COVID-19. Near the end of 2020, the Canada Revenue Agency (CRA) made some changes to address this issue.

Many of you may choose to take advantage of the new temporary flat rate method introduced for 2020. This is the simplest method, which allows for two dollars ($2) for each day you worked from home to a maximum of $400 (200 working days).

Others may want to do a more detailed claim for the time they worked from home which means they will need to get a T2200S from ICBC. It is our understanding that direct report managers are to provide the T2200S to all staff that request a form, if they worked from home due to COVID-19.

The decision on which method to follow is up to each person. We recommend that you review the information on the CRA website and, if need be, seek advice from an income tax professional.

If you require a recommendation, we suggest WE Tax Services. You can find more about them at the bottom of our MoveUP Resources page.

If you have any questions or concerns, please do not hesitate to speak to one of our amazing job stewards at ICBC.

In solidarity,

Annette Toth, Vice-President, ICBC
Cathy Hirani, Acting Senior Union Representative
