MoveUP meets with Minister responsible for ICBC
September 7, 2017
To: All MoveUP members at ICBC
Some big changes are afoot at ICBC and MoveUP is advocating at the highest levels for our members who work there.
Recently, MoveUP President David Black and Vice-President Annette Toth met with the Attorney General and Minister Responsible for ICBC, David Eby.
We are pleased to see that following that meeting, the government has taken steps to ensure the long term viability of ICBC. While no one wants to pay more for auto insurance, rate increases are a necessary evil in finding a way out of the financial mess left behind by the previous government.
We were clear with the Minister that our members take their role as guardians of public money very seriously. Our message to the Minister was as follows: “MoveUP members believe deeply in public auto insurance and know that they are entrusted with the public funds. They want to get back to providing excellent service. They also want to be sure that money is spent wisely and carefully, especially on injury claims and vehicle repairs.”
We support the operational review of ICBC and expect to be involved in an advisory capacity. From our discussions with the Minister, there was no indication that front line staff will be part of any cost saving efforts. In fact, we presented evidence to the Minister that showed an increase in staff leads to a decrease in claims costs, which was noted in ICBC’s annual report.
Of course this won’t be news to any of you on the front lines at ICBC. As you well know, ICBC has been understaffed for years and this is a significant part of the problem.
MoveUP President David Black spoke about this on CKNW with Simi Sara. http://globalnews.ca/bc/program/the-simi-sara-show/. To listen, scroll down to headline “ICBC executives warned about crown corps financial woes.”
As ICBC makes changes, know that we at MoveUP will continue to speak up to ensure your job, pension and future are secure.
