MoveUP unequivocally stands in support and solidarity with our friend and colleague, Adrienne Smith (they/them).
Adrienne, a renowned human rights activist and lawyer, served as chair at the recent federal NDP Convention. They conducted themselves with professionalism and composure, deftly navigating the complexities of a large convention and balancing the needs and concerns of nearly 2000 delegates.
Unfortunately, in the days following the convention, Adrienne – along with many of the equity-deserving speakers – has become the target of vitriolic hate from far-right commentators and online trolls.
The hateful conduct of such individuals demonstrates why we must continue our work to support folks in vulnerable and marginalized communities, including the 2SLGBTQIA+ communities, and advance the values of diversity, equity, inclusion and belonging.
As a community, we must stand up against hate – now and always.
Adrienne has handled this shameful barrage of hate with tremendous class, dignity, and grace. They have embodied the words of the late Jack Layton, former NDP leader: “My friends, love is better than anger. Hope is better than fear. Optimism is better than despair. So let us be loving, hopeful, and optimistic. And we’ll change the world.”
We stand in full support of you, Adrienne. Together, as a community, we will rise above hate, and we will work to change the world for the better.
