Job Action

Vancouver Shipyards – Job Action

July 19, 2024

To: All MoveUP members at Vancouver Shipyards

In order to avoid any confusion, we felt it necessary to elaborate on the July 17 bulletin about the job action we’re in.

As of July 18 at noon, the poly-party began job action banning any overtime and implementing work to rule.

What does this mean for our members? An overtime ban means that no MoveUP member shall perform any work which may incur overtime. You are to work your scheduled shift based on your start and end times only. You are not to provide any coverage beyond your scheduled time. The employer has been made aware of this and is prepared to provide coverage if and when required. For example, this means that if you finish your shift at 2:15pm and afternoon shift has not arrived yet, you should let your supervisor know that you are leaving, not staying longer than your shift to accommodate the needs of the employer.

As far as work to rule, this means that you will only perform the defined duties of your position. If there were things that you did that were not part of your job description, that stops immediately. For example, helping out in stores or in the tool crib on weekends, which falls under the jurisdiction of other unions, must not continue.

If you are unsure of what may or may not be struck work, please reach out to me directly at ygarie@moveuptogether.ca.

In solidarity,

Kithusan Pararasasingam, Job Steward
Yudon Garie, Union Representative
