UWU – BCGEU – Bargaining Update #3 – UWU 72-hour Strike Notice

August 10, 2023

To: All MoveUP Members at BCGEU

As many of you know by now, BCUWU and the employer have come to an impasse causing the BCUWU to issue their 72-hour strike notice. As stated in their bulletin to their members, the employer has already applied for mediation at the Labour Board which means they will not be able to begin job action until 48 hours after the mediator has reported out.

MoveUP prides itself in the level of support we provide for our members and affiliates at multi-union workplaces. We will fully support the job action of the BCUWU in accordance with our Constitution and By-laws, as well you do have protection to respect a legal picket line as stated in Article 2.5 of your Collective Agreement. Supporting another union’s job action is never an easy feat, as our role is that of support so we will need to follow the BCUWU planning efforts. In conversations the BCUWU will try to provide us with as much notice and information as they can, while MoveUP will work to ensure our members are receiving strike pay and limiting impacts to our members to the best of our ability.

Your Bargaining and Job Action Committees will be meeting tomorrow to begin preparation for our third-party support, with hopes to arrange a lunch hour meeting with the general membership as soon as possible. If you have any questions or concerns, please refer to our previous released FAQ.

We would like to thank you all for your patience and your support of your colleagues during this uncertain time. The BCUWU stood with us in solidarity for our job action and now is the time we give them the same support in their fight for a fair contract.

In Solidarity,

Phil Bargen, Union Representative

Christy Slusarenko, Vice President Combined Units
