Take part in the National Inquiry into Missing and Murdered Indigenous Women and Girls

March 24, 2017

To: MoveUP Councillors, Stewards and Distributors

The National Inquiry wants to recognize every family member and loved one of the missing or murdered indigenous women and girls in Canada.

B.C. unions are sharing information with their members about how to take part in the Inquiry to help reach all Canadians who may be affected.

If you are a family member or survivor of violence and want to share your personal story or give evidence (testifying) to the National Inquiry, you are considered a witness and do not need to apply for standing. In this case, you also will not need to apply for funding, as certain expenses will be covered by another process. To share your story or give evidence, please send an email to profile@mmiwg-ffada.ca, or mail a letter to PO Box 500, Station A, Vancouver B.C. V6C 2N3.

If you are not a family member, or survivor of violence, but you have interest in, or are part of a larger group with interest in, and could directly benefit the work of the National Inquiry, then the standing application may be helpful.

“Standing” means to get certain rights outside of testifying, such as:

  • the right to give a statement at the closing of the hearing regarding recommendations, and should be relevant to more than one single person’s story;

  • the right to request the commission lawyers to show specific evidence;

  • the right to cross examine, to ask more questions to witnesses at the institutional, organizations or experts hearings; or

  • the right to access specific documents.

For those individuals or groups submitting a standing application and who would not be able to take part without funding, there is a funding application.

The standing and funding applications must be submitted together, and will be approved by the Commissioners in writing.

Submission deadline for standing application is on Monday, April 10 at 5:00 p.m. PDT.
