SALAL: Policy Grievance Update
December 13, 2023
To: All MoveUP Members at SALAL
Your union facilitated two virtual membership meetings to discuss the terms of this settlement yesterday. As some of you were unable to attend, we want to take this opportunity to explain the process and why we accepted these terms.
- Given the non-for-profit nature of the organization, we selected the expedited arbitration under section 104 of the Labour Relations Code. A s. 104 arbitration is comparatively cost effective. Its expedited framework enables your union to help mitigate adverse impact on affected members.
- We reviewed the employer’s financial statements to assess their overall affordability for a settlement and legal costs.
- The one-time lump sum payment is for the employees on the steps – it does not affect those who did receive their 2020 and 2023 general wage increases.
- The 2022 2% General Increase will be applied to the period between May 1, 2022 and April 30, 2023 to hours worked and paid leaves; and
- The 2023 2% General Increase will be applied to the period between May 1, 2023 and November 30, 2023 to hours worked and paid leaves.
- We recognize that the current collective agreement will expire on April 30, 2024. Meeting of the minds is one of your bargaining committee’s top priorities for the upcoming negotiation.
Your union wants to thank you for your continued support and patience while we discussed and resolved this matter with the employer. Should you have any questions or concerns, please do not hesitate to contact your union representative.
In Solidarity,
Anny Chen, Union Representative
