MTUG – 2024 Cost of Living Adjustment (COLA) for MTUG members

January 17, 2024

To: All MoveUP members at MTUG

Background

In the negotiations for the renewal of the MTUG-MoveUP collective agreement, the parties agreed that COLA would apply in the years 2023 and 2024 for the previous 12 months up to a maximum of nine (9%) percent.

This calculation would be according to whatever Statistics Canada calculated the cost of living increase to be for the 2022 and 2023 calendar years per its Consumer Price Index (CPI) calculation.

Because the parties did not know what the potential increase would be, it was agreed that MoveUP members would receive three (3%) percent effective January 1, 2023 and January 1, 2024.

If COLA was more than three (3%) percent, MoveUP members would receive the higher COLA percentage retroactive to January 1 of the applicable year.

For 2022, the CPI was calculated to be 6.8% so the wage increase for 2023 and Year 2 of the collective agreement is 6.8% retroactive to January 1, 2023.

For 2023, the CPI was calculated to be 3.9% so the wage increase for 2024 and Year 3 of the collective agreement is 3.9% retroactive to January 1, 2024.

What This Means

With the CPI confirmed at 3.90% retroactive to January 1, 2024, MoveUP members will receive this amount on top of their wage rates for Year 1 and Year 2 of the collective agreement.

e.g. Category 4 as of January 1, 2023 was $41.65 per hour—with the increase, the hourly wage will now be $43.27 for 2024.

Next Steps

MTUG employers will work with their bookkeepers or payroll staff to implement the increase retroactive to the beginning of January 2024, with the increases applied over the next couple of weeks.

MTUG employers are encouraged to reach out to Stephen if they have any questions.

MoveUP job stewards are encouraged to discuss this wage adjustment with their local employers and the rollout.

MoveUP members are encouraged to watch their future pay statements to ensure accuracy and let their local employer if they have any questions.

MoveUP members should also reach out to their job steward, and for MoveUP job stewards to reach out to Daniel if they or their colleagues have any questions.

Sincerely,

Stephen von Sychowski, VDLC President
Daniel Storms, MoveUP Union Representative
