MoveUP – Union Representative Training Program

August 12, 2022

To: MoveUP members

Are you a union activist interested in learning more about the work of MoveUP’s full-time Union Representatives and further developing your skills in labour relations such as grievance handling, arbitrations, and contract negotiations? Do you have a passion for developing union activism, progressive values, and building engagement between MoveUP and its members?

Applications are now open for MoveUP’s Union Representative Training Program, an immersive program designed to develop skilled activists from within MoveUP’s membership who will later provide advanced labour relations advice to job stewards and members in their workplaces and provide coverage for staff absences in the MoveUP offices.

What to Expect

The program follows an intense and immersive six-month plan, during which time you will be booked off from your current job to fully participate in the program. During this time, you will engage in directed study and work with the skilled staff in MoveUP’s various departments as you learn what is required to be a Union Representative at MoveUP.

By the end of the program, graduates will be fully qualified in the fundamentals of union-side labour relations and will be able to provide advanced service to MoveUP’s members, both in their own workplaces and in MoveUP’s office when coverage is needed due to staff absences.

Who Can Apply?

This exciting program is open to all MoveUP members who have completed Job Steward Level 1 and Level 2 training courses and have attended at least one Job Steward Seminar with MoveUP. Equivalencies, such as training taken with another labour organization, will be considered. Additional training, courses, and experience as a union activist or volunteer are also an asset.

Other Requirements

Candidates must meet the following requirements:

  • Have a valid B.C. driver’s license and access to a vehicle.
  • Be able to work full-time at MoveUP’s office, located at 4501 Kingsway, Burnaby, B.C.
  • Be able to work full-time hours, Monday-Friday from 8:30 a.m. – 4:30 p.m.
  • Be flexible with hours of work when required.
  • Be able to travel within Canada when required.
  • Be prepared to be in this program for a minimum of six months.

To remove barriers and ensure that members see themselves reflected in our union, we may apply a lens of diversity, equity, and inclusion as part of our selection process. Applicants from equity-seeking communities may elect to self-identify as part of the application process; however, it is not a requirement.
