POSITION: Communications Officer – Full Time Regular
SALARY: $4,702.58 bi-weekly
Salary, benefits, and other additional compensation premiums are in accordance with the MoveUP/USW2009 collective agreement.
Additionally, a condition of employment is to supply your own vehicle, also in accordance with the collective agreement. Some occasional travel within B.C. and Canada may be needed, as required.
PRIMARY DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES/CRITICAL TASKS:
Key responsibilities include, but are not limited to:
Written Communication:
- Write, edit and produce a wide variety of communications, including bulletins, letters, newsletters, interviews, reports, memos, speeches, talking points, articles, advertising copy, media releases and advisories, opinion editorials, and social media posts.
Member Engagement:
- Develop programs and tools to help with member engagement and community outreach, with an emphasis on facilitating member participation in union activities, organizing and storytelling.
Digital Engagement:
- Develop and manage digital tools for member engagement, with a focus on storytelling, campaigns and organizing.
Graphic and Digital Design
- Design leaflets, images and social media shareables. Produce print publications either on own, or in conjunction with an external graphic designer.
- Help to maintain the union’s website by planning, and updating web pages, and working with the other Communications staff to produce web content.
- Develop and maintain MoveUP’s presence on social media: increase the overall profile of the union to our members and the public and to increase coverage on social media and in print materials of member’s stories. This includes monitoring emerging digital tools for future use.
Public and Media Relations
- Help to create strategic messages to best frame the Union’s issues, as well as supporting other members of the communications team with media stories and inquiries as directed.
- Assist with daily media monitoring, including the creation of a digest highlighting stories of interest to MoveUP’s members.
- Liaise with other unions, media, and elected officials on behalf of MoveUP.
Training and Education:
- Design and deliver programs both in-person and via digital programs, in areas such as, but not limited to interviewing, writing, photography, and video production.
Event and Volunteer Management
- Organize campaign events and attend all types of events, when needed.
- Contact, supervise, and coordinate campaign member volunteers.
- Support the Union’s Leadership and other union staff at public or union events.
Other
- Attend and present at all functions, as required. Manage special projects, as needed.
- Oversee expenditures, and adhere to budgets and other related administrative tasks, such as purchase orders, and cheque requisitions.
- Other duties as assigned.
QUALIFICATIONS:
- College or university degree/diploma in communications, journalism, labour studies, social sciences, English, or related discipline OR equivalent lived and/or work experience
- Training and Education Skills: Proven experience in designing and conducting both in-person and digital training programs and tools, especially in interviewing, writing, photography, video production, and other relevant fields. Knowledge and experience in these areas are key.
- Digital Engagement Expertise: Proficiency in developing and managing digital engagement tools, focusing on storytelling, campaigns, and organizing. Ability to evaluate and improve these based on feedback is valuable.
- Member Engagement: Strong skills in engaging members and community outreach, with a focus on encouraging participation in union activities, organizing, and storytelling.
- A solid grounding in trade union principles. Strong communications background, labour or social justice background, campaigns experience, as well as political networking are assets.
- Proven ability to work cooperatively with volunteers, diverse cultural communities, 2SLGBTQIA+ communities, union members, politicians, union leaders, non-profits and community groups on a range of issues.
- Excellent skills in project and time management, multitasking, organizing, and scheduling.
- Demonstrated superior oral and written communication skills, and excellent interpersonal communication skills that are clearly evident both in person and over the phone.
- Have demonstrated ability to be proactive and self-starting and work in a team-based environment.
- Ability to take direction and work under pressure.
- Strong proficiency in Microsoft Office. Some proficiency in Adobe Creative Suite, video editing, Action Builder or other engagement tools. Experience with online design tools such as Canva as well as online learning management systems are assets.
- Demonstrated interest and/or participation in trade union activities essential.
