March 8, 2023 is International Women’s Day

March 8, 2023

To: All MoveUP Members

Today, March 8, marks International Women’s Day. The theme for this year is “Embrace Equity.”

Women around the world are still fighting to have the same rights and pay as their men counterparts and while there have been strides made towards equal opportunities, they simply are not enough. It’s important to acknowledge that people start from different places so, to be truly inclusive and provide a sense of belonging, we need to push for an equitable action.

It is important to also understand the difference between “equality” and “equity.” The former is good, but the latter is what we strive for. You can learn more about the difference between the two by clicking here.

This year, our Women & Gender Rights Committee (WGRC) is asking you to take small actions that will make a large impact and show our strength in numbers to our own governments and show solidarity with women around the world.

Visit internationalwomensday.com and see what the #EmbraceEquity pose looks like. Then, strike your pose and snap a photo and share it with us by tagging us on social media or by emailing a photo to outreach@moveuptogether.ca.

MoveUP, along with 127 other organizations plus countless other individuals, were also signatories on an open letter by the CCPA to the BC provincial government calling for pay equity legislation. You can add your name to the call by signing the open letter here.

We are pleased to see yesterday, on March 7, that the BC government announced a new pay transparency legislation. This is a step towards the path of pay equity, but we know there is more work to be done and we need your help to lend a voice to the cause.

Thank you for your support.

On behalf of your WGRC,

Christy Slusarenko
Committee Chair
