May 30, 2023
To: All MoveUP Youth Action Committee Members
We welcome you to join your Youth Action Committee to attend the annual Grant’s Law Sit-in on June 3rd, 2023. We will be meeting 8:30-8:45 p.m. in front of Dollar Tree (2606 Commercial Dr, Vancouver, BC V5N 5R4).
We will caucus as a group and cross the street to join other affiliates for the annual check-in.
The event will go from 9 p.m. to 4 a.m. but it is not expected you stay for the whole period.
If you are unable to secure a safe ride home, you can order a taxi home and we will reimburse this expense. Feel free to contact Dimitri or Rhys for help with this reimbursement.
This event is a good opportunity to socialize with your fellow committee members as well as members of other youth labour affiliates.
Please feel free to join our event WhatsApp group (click the link or scan the QR code):

Event Background:
“In 2005, a young worker, Grant De Patie (24), was killed during his overnight shift at a Maple Ridge gas station while trying to apprehend a drunk driver from stealing gas.
As a result, in 2008, Grant’s Law was established by the BC Liberals to bolster safety requirements for overnight employees at gas stations and other stores.
However, in 2012, the Liberal government then chose to reduce these safety requirements as a result of lobbying from large corporations like Mac’s.
Young workers are vulnerable employees that are easily and often exploited and endangered by their employers to reduce company costs.
Please join us for Grant’s Law Sit-In to raise awareness and promote the full reinstatement of Grant’s Law as it was originally passed.”
In Solidarity,
Rhys Coulter and Dimitri Ossinsky
