Implementation of Finger-Scanning Technology

February 1, 2018

To: All MoveUP Members at Canadian Freightways

The union has been made aware that Canadian Freightways will be implementing a finger-scanning security system at all their locations the week of February 5, 2018.  Some of you have voiced concerns with this biometric technology as it relates to privacy concerns.  Others have voiced concerns regarding cleanliness and possible transfer of germs.

We have contacted the employer and they have supplied us with detailed information from the company who will be installing these systems.  The purpose of this security system is to verify the employee’s identity then grant them access into the employer’s place of business.  We have been assured that this biometric timeclock will not collect and store your fingerprint.  The devices will save an encrypted mathematical representation of your biometric data and cannot reproduce your fingerprint image.

In addressing the possible transfer of germs, we suggest that it is no different than touching door handles or other objects in the workplace.  To avoid possible contamination, it is recommended that you wash your hands numerous times throughout the day.

If you have any other questions or concerns, please do not hesitate to contact the union.

In solidarity
