ICBC-Protective Footwear

June 27, 2022

To: All MoveUP members at ICBC Driver Examiner II

Your union raised a grievance in 2021 regarding the denial of reimbursement for protective footwear for a Driver Examiner II. During the grievance process, it was decided that the best way to pursue this issue is through your Provincial OH&S Committee to try to get the job description for a DE II changed to make protective footwear a requirement.

Your Provincial OH&S Committee has been working with the employer on this issue for quite some time now. Your employer did conduct an assessment and came to the conclusion that while there are some minimal hazards, it is not to the level that would require CSA protective footwear under WorkSafeBC.

Your union whole-heartedly disagrees with the employer’s position on this issue and now we’re coming to you for your input.

We have attached a document called Safety Footwear Risk Assessment. We’re asking that all DE IIs take the time to complete this form and return it to Brian Martens at bmartens@moveuptogether.ca. In addition, for those who work as a DE II, we would appreciate a coordinated effort amongst you and your co-workers to get photos of each of the lots where you perform Class 1-4 tests. According to the employer, most lots are paved or maintained, and the hazard risk is minimal. We have seen photos of a few lots and we know that paved lots don’t appear common. This information is needed to accurately rate the risk that you are exposed to like water-filled puddles, potential hazardous fluids, nails, etc. If we could personally visit each location, we would, but we can’t and that’s why we need you. Again, please send 1 email with photos to bmartens@moveuptogether.ca with the city name in the subject line.

We want to make sure that our members are safe and protected and we need your help to do that.

If you have any questions or concerns, please contact ygarie@moveuptogether.ca, your Provincial OH&S Co-Chair – Nicole Williams, (nicole.williams@icbc.com), or a Provincial Committee member – Brian Martens (bmartens@moveuptogether.ca).

In solidarity,

Nicole Williams, Provincial OH&S Co-Chair
Brian Martens, Provincial OH&S Committee Member
Yudon Garie, Union Representative
