ICBC – Our Concerns with ICBC’s Plan to Repopulate Offices

September 2, 2021

To: All MoveUP members at ICBC

At MoveUP, we are concerned to see the number of COVID-19 cases rise in BC and how that could impact our members and your communities. We have repeatedly asked ICBC to hold off on their plan to reintegrate more people into their buildings. However, they are unmoved and are determined to continue, regardless of the alarming rate of new infections.

In one month, COVID-19 case counts in the province have risen drastically. On August 1, there were 185 new cases reported. On September 1, there were 785 new cases. Thankfully, the rate of vaccination is also increasing with 85.696% of people aged 12 years and over having had at least one dose of a vaccine and 77.712% of that same group having received both doses. Vaccinations*, in conjunction with robust safety plans and Public Health Orders, are critical to all of us getting out of this pandemic and returning to our lives as we once enjoyed them.

We have heard from many members upset that ICBC’s plan to repopulate the offices as of next week is unnecessary, especially considering the rising cases of COVID-19. We agree completely. However, it is important to note that ICBC’s plan does meet the province’s restart plan under step 3.

We will continue to monitor this evolving situation and will continue to push ICBC to hold off on their plan as we know other government agencies and Crown Corporations have chosen to do.

If you or your family require mental health support during this time, please contact the confidential Employee and Family Assistance Program at 1-866-395-9191 immediately. And if you are feeling sick, please stay home.

Wishing everyone a very happy Labour Day!

In solidarity,
Annette Toth, Vice President
