ICBC – CEF: Learn, Grow and Lead by Becoming a Job Steward with MoveUP

May 11, 2017

To: All MoveUP members at ICBC Coquitlam Central Estimating

Our job stewards occupy some of the most important roles in our union. Stewards provide workplace leadership and information, insight and understanding to the staff and elected representatives at the MoveUP office. They offer support and guidance to their co-workers, keep little problems from becoming big ones, and help make the workplace function smoothly.

Becoming a job steward is a rewarding experience. It’s an opportunity to help and support your colleagues, while learning valuable skills. As a steward you will learn about your and your co-workers’ rights, and how to stand up to make sure members in your workplace are treated fairly. And several of our ICBC stewards have said that they’ve learned a lot about the way ICBC works through being a steward, and that taking on this role has given them a chance to network with other MoveUP stewards from different departments across the corporation. MoveUP offers regular opportunities for training to learn all the tools needed, which includes conflict resolution and a deeper understanding of your collective agreement.

We’re looking for people we can train to be top-notch workplace advocates. We want to make sure you and your co-workers get all the info and support you need, and the best way to do that is with a strong and healthy group of stewards in all communities, in every department.

Please read our online member guide “What is a Job Steward and How do I Become One?” and consider putting your name forward. If your department already has a steward, that’s okay. Every department can and should have more than one steward so there is coverage if someone’s away.

If you are interested in becoming a steward or learning more about the role, please email Annette Toth Vice-President at atoth@moveuptogether.ca.

In Solidarity,

Annette Toth
Vice President
