ICBC – Bargaining Update #10
October 8, 2019
To: MoveUP members at ICBC
Bargaining continued on September 26 and 27 and we are back at table this week, October 8-10. Our focus continues to be on non-monetary proposals, and we are making progress. We have spent a great deal of time talking about health and safety at ICBC, and we are attempting to rework the outdated language in Article 22. This is an important topic and time needs to be thoughtfully and thoroughly dedicated to health and safety in your workplace.
As part of our talks we provided an overview of the musculoskeletal (MSI) injury survey that we did a few months back. The results of the survey are now available here. We have not published all of the written comments as there were over 1000, however, we have read all of them and thank you for taking the time to complete the survey. Your feed back helped us frame our message to ICBC.
We also asked Niki Schnurr, WCB Representative and OH&S Liaison for MoveUP, to make a presentation to ICBC on both the MSI survey results and MSI claims at the Workers Compensation Board (WCB/WorkSafe BC). We have attached her presentation here for your information. One of the most concerning statistics from our survey is the number of unreported and unclaimed MSI injuries our members identified. You do not have to just ‘suffer through’.
If you experience pain and discomfort and you believe this is related to the work you do at ICBC, such as keyboarding and mousing, you should get it documented by your physician, advise your manager, and file a claim with the WCB. The nature of work has changed at ICBC and that means your risk of developing an MSI injury may have also changed.
If your claim with the WCB is denied, please know you aren’t alone. Contact Niki Schnurr at nschnurr@moveuptogether.ca. She is available to help members get the support they need from the WCB. As well, we recommend you discuss with your Joint Worksite OH&S Committee and your manager about getting an ergonomic assessment of your workstation.
We want you to be safe and healthy at work and we are here to help.
In Solidarity,
