Enterprise – COVID-19 – Update #4

March 24, 2020

To: All MoveUP members at Enterprise

Your Union has been in daily contact with management.  The COVID-19 pandemic is continually evolving and information and plans are changing very rapidly.

There was a conference call last night between senior management and your Job Stewards.  Management announced that the situation at YVR has deteriorated and there is no indication of when things may return to normal.

Management announced that the plan to keep everyone working at reduced hours is no longer possible and that 40 people would be laid off.  This will leave 49 members still working.

Reduced hours will be in place with Enterprise being open from 6:00am until 11:00pm.  The administration building will be closed on Friday and Saturdays.

Your Union requested and Enterprise agreed to allow people to take a voluntary layoff.  We have heard that some members may have reconsidered and would prefer to not be at work.  This may allow some who want to take a lay off to do so while allowing others to continue working if they want.

We are aware that some members were not happy with the proposal for reduced hours.  Your Union never wants to be in a position where we have to make decisions without consulting our members.  Unfortunately, the COVID-19 pandemic has placed us in that position due to the rapid changes taking place in car rentals and society.  The reduced work hours plan is an example of the way things can change.  Much work went into making it happen and in the end the plan lasted less than five days.

We are likely to see further changes in the industry and our daily lives.  This is a difficult situation for everyone and patience, decency, and understanding are needed more than ever.  In the next few days, it is possible that the provincial government will close all businesses except those considered to be essential services.  As of last night, Enterprise was not sure if car rentals would fall under that category.

Please be advised that our office was closed as of last Wednesday with only a skeleton crew working from our offices.  MoveUP staff has been directed to not attend meetings in person when at all possible in order to avoid unnecessary interactions.  Most representatives are working from home.

Please be safe and we will continue to keep our members updated as the situation evolves.  If you have any questions please contact me at slakusta@moveuptogether.ca.  I will attempt to get back to you with an answer as soon as possible.

In solidarity,

Shawn Lakusta, Union Representative
Christy Slusarenko, Vice-President of Combined Units
