Customer Abuse Stops at the Door

May 15, 2018

To: MoveUP members at ICBC

Starting last June and going right through into this year, your union has been raising the alarm bells about the abuse our members have experienced by customers and even some business partners. We brought this issue to the attention of our membership, ICBC and even the media, especially when survey results indicated it was rampant and going unchecked. We are pleased to see that ICBC is implementing new signage around the province that tells everyone who walks into their buildings that abuse of their employees, in any form, will not be tolerated.

It is the union’s opinion that every entrance that a customer or business partner could enter, should have effective signage that points out that abuse is prohibited. If you have not received the new signage, please advise your manager immediately so they can follow up and ensure it gets to your location.

We are hoping that all phone calls coming in to ICBC will also have a greeting advising customers that abuse over the phones will not be tolerated prior to them ever speaking to an employee.

Remember, abuse is not part of the job and should not be tolerated. If you are experiencing abusive language or behaviour, please report this to your supervisor, manager, job steward and Health and Safety Committee. You have a right to a workplace free of harassment, which includes abuse from customers. You do not have to accept it or believe it is ‘just part of the job.’

In solidarity,

Annette Toth
Vice-President
