Coast Mountain Bus – Transit Security Schedule Changes

December 15, 2021

To: All MoveUP members at Coast Mountain Bus

As you know management has announced that they will be making changes to the sign-up options available to members. While your union is concerned about these changes, we recognize that the employer has the right to manage, and this includes determining the schedule.

Your job stewards and I met with the employer to discuss the possible changes on December 7.  At that meeting the changes and the reasoning behind the changes were discussed.  Your union asked to have input into any possible changes to the sign-up and management agreed to further consultation.

Following the meeting with management, your union committee met to discuss options to elicit feedback from our members.  Accordingly, we are asking members to provide any constructive suggestions and comments at this email.  We will be meeting with management again in the latter part of January so we would appreciate receiving any feedback by Wednesday, January 12, so that we can properly prepare for the follow-up meeting.

We are aware that changes to the sign-up will impact the ability of members to manage their personal lives.  Important life issues such as family commitments, educational opportunities, and health concerns are all potentially affected by changes to a member’s work schedule.  We are of course also aware that seniority is a critical component of any bargaining unit relationship.  When we meet with management, we want to be able to address any items such as these so we would appreciate hearing specific concerns.  In addition to the concerns, it will also be important to receive constructive suggestions about ways to minimize any potential negative impacts.  We have been advised that we will have the opportunity to present suggestions and alternatives, and these will be considered as the sign-up changes evolve towards the final result.

In order to have input we agreed to delay the normal January sign-up.  Apologies for any inconvenience this may have caused but we felt it was important to have the opportunity to provide input towards the proposed sign-up changes. If we are going to improve the morale in the department we will need to improve the current level of communication between members and management.  We are hoping this process will provide a start towards that goal.

Your committee is looking forward to hearing from you.

In solidarity,

Shawn Lakusta, Union Representative
Christy Slusarenko, Vice-President, Combined Units
