Coast Mountain Bus Layoff Notices

April 20, 2020

To: All MoveUP members at Coast Mountain Bus

Your union has been advocating with various channels of government seeking emergency funding for TransLink to keep the system operational. Despite those continuing efforts, the employer contacted the union early last week advising that there may be potential layoff notices at CMBC.

The union organized and struck an emergency Union Committee (“COVID 19 Pandemic- Labour Adjustment Committee”) of elected officers to deal with potential upcoming layoffs. Members of this committee, include; Vivian Ho, Ruth Ritchie, Brendan Faustin, Sean Gosse, and VP Christy Slusarenko. Your Union was anticipating having discussions with the employer this week on a Labour Adjustment Plan as required under the BC Labour Relations Code.

The employer sent a draft Labour Adjustment Agreement to your union on Saturday April 18, 2020. Without proper consultation with your union, the employer announced late Sunday on April 19, 2020 that they would be proceeding with layoff notices on Monday morning, April 20, 2020. Your union considers this unilateral action to be very poor labour relations. MoveUP is considering every avenue for recourse, including grievances and seeking relief from the Labour Relations Board.

If you have questions about the layoff notices issued today, please feel free to contact members of the COVID 19 Labour Adjustment Committee or your Union Representative, Parm Sandhar.

There will be a webinar tonight for all members in the Transit Sector which will be chaired by Union Representative Parm Sandhar, President David Black, and Vice President Christy Slusarenko.

To participate in the webinar, please click here to register. After you register, the login information will be automatically emailed to you.

In solidarity,
