Celebrating Diwali on November 8; Enter our contest for a chance to win a MoveUP prize pack

November 6, 2026

To: All MoveUP members

Our union would like to wish all our members and their families a Happy Diwali/Bandi Chhor Divas!

Over the centuries, Diwali has become an international festival that is enjoyed by most Indians regardless of their faith: Hindus, Jains, Buddhists, and Sikhs.

This year, Diwali takes place on Sunday, November 8.

Here are some interesting facts about Diwali:

  • Diwali is celebrated for Lord Rama as his return to Ayodhya after 14 years of exile and defeating Ravana
  • Goddess Laskhmi, the Goddess of Wealth, Prosperity and Good Fortune, is worshipped on Diwali
  • In Sikhism, Diwali is also known as Bandi Chhor Divas – Day of Liberation
  • Guru Hargobind Ji freed the 52 princes by having a special cloak with 52 tassels that each prince held
  • The Golden Temple was first illuminated at Sri Harmandi Sahib, Amritsar

If you have colleagues or friends who celebrate Diwali, we encourage you to take the time to wish them a happy and prosperous festival of lights.

Test your Diwali knowledge by entering our trivia contest! Participants will be entered into a random draw for a MoveUP prize pack! Deadline to enter the contest is November 10. Click here to enter.

From time to time, we share information about major global holidays, events, and celebrations from different cultures. Find out about other holidays and events here.

In solidarity,

Brenda Chu & Christy Slusarenko
Co-chairs, Human Rights & Cultural Diversity Committee

Special thanks to Surinder Cheema for creating the questions for the contest!
