CapU – Upcoming DiSC Evaluation

March 6, 2024

To: All MoveUP members at CapU

We’ve been notified that the University has sent a communication to several members encouraging them to sign for a “Everything DiSC” workshop on Tuesday, March 12th under the guarantee that participation will “allows us to create a common language to improve our everyday interactions and CapU culture.”

The Union was not notified of this undertaking. We are writing to notify employees that participation is not mandatory. In fact, we discourage it.

The University claims that the “DiSC program enhances workplace interactions by exploring our individual behavioral preferences, tendencies, communication styles, as well as those of our colleagues. It provides practical strategies to bridge communication gaps, resolve conflicts and leverage understanding of self and others.”

DISC assessments are behavioral assessment tools based on controversial psychologist William Moulton Marston’s DISC emotional and behavioral theory. These assessments claim to predict job performance by categorizing individuals into four personality traits: dominance, inducement, submission, and compliance.

The DISC program is largely considered pseudoscience and is quite controversial in employment settings. It has been used by other employers in the past to justify team compositions and pre\evaluate job performance.

Although there’s been no discussion on the Employer’s intention and if or how the assessment will be used in your workplace, we are cautioning against participation regardless.

In Solidarity,

Darin Feist, Executive Councillor
Chris Shier, Executive Councillor
Suzanne Perreault, Executive Councillor
Nathan Beausoleil, Union Representative
