CapilanoU Bargaining-Update #9 – Upcoming Mediation

May 8, 2023

To: All MoveUP Members at CapilanoU

To summarize our last bulletin (read it here):

The employer, without notice, filed for mediation assistance from the BC Labour Relations Board on April 11, 2023. In good faith, and in the interest of attempting to resolve bargaining without job action and, without interruption to student services, we agreed to move forward with mediation.

The employer continues to refuse to have a principal present at mediation.

Since our last bulletin on April 25, 2023:

The parties have agreed to meet this Wednesday, May 10, for mediation. We will have a better understanding of the likelihood that mediation will be successful after the meeting.

We will be providing an update on the status of mediation after Wednesday via bulletin. As well, we will be holding a membership meeting to discuss the status of bargaining and job action directly with you, and answer any questions you might have. The membership meeting details are as follows:

Date: Thursday, May 11, 2023
Time: 12:30 p.m. to 2 p.m.
Place: Zoom (click here to register for the meeting)

Members of your bargaining committee continue to roam the main campus until May 12, 2023, finalizing our job action schedule and fielding any questions you might have. Feel free to reach out while we’re on campus if you have any questions.

Getting involved:

A few spots remain on our job action committee, so sign up quickly if you are interested in participating. We will soon be offering training for picket captains, and you can sign up to either by e-mailing Nathan or Christy at nbeausoleil@moveuptogether.ca  and cslusarenko@moveuptogether.ca.

As you are likely aware from our previous bulletins, the employer’s committee took the position that refusal to move on our core mandate issues were at the direction of the Board of Governors.

So we recently sent this letter to them for consideration.

You can show your support for the letter by signing our petition:

Go to https://moveuptogether.ca/capu-flex-petition/ and let the Board know that we need to work together to accomplish an inclusive, safe and supportive workplace culture and to meet our collective goals for Envisioning 2030.

You can further show your support by using our new zoom and teams background, which you can download here. More colour variations will be released soon. Try them all!

We look forward to sharing more information with you on Thursday.

In solidarity.

Your Bargaining Committee:

Eric Roberts, Executive Councillor
Suzanne Perreault, Executive Councillor
Nathan Beausoleil, Union Representative
Christy Slusarenko, Vice-President of Combined Units
